Requires a prescription Azathioprine 50 mg tablets Packaged Why is Azathioprine used: Azathioprine is used to treat the following: • Prevent the body from rejecting kidney, liver, or heart transplants • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis) • Severe rheumatoid arthritis • Chronic skin and/or intestinal inflammation (systemic lupus erythematosus) • Dermatomyositis • Hepatitis • Autoimmune disorder where the scattered platelet count decreases due to immune system destruction (chronic resistant thrombocytopenic purpura) • Appearance of skin ulcers (pemphigus vulgaris) Do not take Azathioprine if: • You are allergic to Azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine Warnings and precautions: Talk to your doctor before taking Azathioprine: • If you are going to get vaccinated • If you are currently taking Ribavirin • If you have kidney or liver problems • If you had hepatitis B • If you experience signs or symptoms (headache, loss of coordination, weakness, speech loss, memory loss, vision problems) • If you or your partner are pregnant or planning pregnancy • If you suffer from autoimmune diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) Possible side effects: Seek medical advice immediately if you experience: • Allergic reactions: swelling of the face, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing, or dizziness • Severe ulcers in the skin, mouth, eyes, and genital organs • Different types of cancers • You may develop a rash, especially on your arms, hands, fingers, face, and neck Other medications and Azathioprine: Medications that may interact with or be affected by Azathioprine: Before surgery, inform the anesthesiologist that you are taking Azathioprine • Medications used to treat gout • Muscle relaxants • Medications used to treat chronic inflammatory bowel diseases • Warfarin, Acenocoumarol (anticoagulants) • Medications used to treat high blood pressure or heart failure How to take Azathioprine: • These tablets should be taken orally and can be taken with food or on an empty stomach • These tablets should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after consuming milk or dairy products How to store Azathioprine: • Keep this medication out of sight and reach of children • Do not use this medication after the expiration date printed on the carton/pack after EXP. The expiration date indicates the last day of the same month • Store at a temperature below 25°C. Protect from light • Do not dispose of medications via wastewater or household waste
