What is paracetamol / codeine / caffeine and what is its use
This medicine will be of three active ingredients; paracetamol, codeine, and caffeine. Paracetamol is a medicine belonging to a class of medicines known as pain relievers and fever reducers. Phosphate of codeine is a medicine belonging to a class of medicines known as 'opioid analgesics,' and it is a mild pain reliever and a light cough suppressant. Caffeine is used to increase the absorption of paracetamol and enhance its pain-relieving effect. This combination of active ingredients is used to relieve moderate pain.
Do not take paracetamol / codeine / caffeine
• If you are allergic to paracetamol, codeine, caffeine, opioids, or any ingredients of this medicine. Inform your doctor about allergies and symptoms you have.
• If you are taking other products containing acetaminophen. Make sure not to exceed the dose.
• If you have difficulty breathing or asthma.
• If you have chronic constipation.
• If you are breastfeeding.
• If you have recently undergone surgery on the bile duct.
• If you are taking or have taken in the past 14 days medications known as MAO inhibitors (used for depression).
• If you have had a previous head injury or a problem causing increased intracranial pressure.
• If you are aware that your body usually converts codeine to morphine very quickly.
Do not give paracetamol / codeine / caffeine to patients
• Who suffer from severe sleep apnea (breathing stops and resumes repeatedly during sleep), who are 18 years or younger, and who have had tonsil or adenoid removal.
• Children under 12 years old.
Precautions and warnings
• Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, rash, swelling of the face or neck, low blood pressure, or dizziness.
• Make sure to inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, including alcoholic liver disease, or if you suffer from mild arthritis and need to take painkillers daily.
• Long-term use of this medicine may be harmful to your liver.
• Contact your doctor if symptoms are not relieved.
• Tell your doctor if you are intolerant to certain types of sugars or have G6PD deficiency.
• Inform your doctor if you are a chronic alcohol consumer, have had gallbladder removal, or suffer from malnutrition, dehydration, thyroid or abdominal problems, low blood pressure, or hemolytic anemia (a type of anemia).
• Inform your doctor if you have glutathione deficiency.
• Talk to your doctor if your weight is less than 50 kg.
• Make sure to take this medicine at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration.
• Avoid excessive intake of products containing caffeine (such as tea, coffee, and some canned beverages). Taking this medicine with products containing caffeine may cause nervousness and agitation.
• This medicine has been shown to convert to morphine in some patients. Be sure to discuss with your doctor if you experience side effects of rapid conversion of this medicine to morphine, such as confusion, pinpoint pupils, slow or shallow breathing, constipation, drowsiness, nausea or vomiting, and loss of appetite. Stop the medication immediately if any of these signs appear.
Possible side effects of paracetamol / codeine / caffeine
Possible side effects include signs of allergic reactions such as rash and itching, signs of breathing problems like difficulty breathing, which are more likely if you have previously experienced them after taking painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofen, sudden weight loss, nausea, yellowing of the skin and eyes, loss of appetite, unexplained bleeding or bruising, and stomach pain. Common side effects include nausea, constipation, dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness, worsening headache, and dependence if used for a long time.
Other medications and paracetamol / codeine / caffeine
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken or might take any of the following:
• Metoclopramide or domperidone (used for vomiting or nausea).
• Cholestyramine (used to lower cholesterol).
• Blood thinners (such as warfarin) and need to take a painkiller daily. Chronic use of painkillers and blood thinners may increase bleeding risk.
• Other medicines containing paracetamol.
• Antidepressants (including MAO inhibitors), sedatives, phenothiazines, alcohol, or any other drug that may cause drowsiness.
• Probenecid (used for gout).
• Decongestants (used to reduce nasal congestion).
How to take paracetamol / codeine / caffeine
Adults: Take one to two tablets orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours.
Adolescents aged 16-18: Take one to two tablets orally every 6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours.
Children aged 12-15: Take one tablet orally every 6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours.
Children under 12 years: Do not give this medicine to children under 12 years.
• Talk to your doctor and stop taking the medicine if pain is not relieved within 3 days or if you feel unwell or if new signs or symptoms appear.
• Take tablets with food or without. Take the tablet after food if you have stomach pain.
• Take the tablet with a full glass of water.
• Do not take a higher dose than recommended and do not take the medicine more often than every 4 hours.
• Do not take this medicine with other medicines containing paracetamol or codeine.
Storage of paracetamol / codeine / caffeine
• Keep the medicine out of reach of children and pets.
• Do not store the medicine above 25°C.
• Do not use the medicine after the expiration date printed on the package.
• Keep the medicine in its original packaging to protect from moisture and light.
• Do not use damaged tablets.
• Do not dispose of medicines in wastewater or household waste.
